"Navarathne"The ring with nine blessed gems has been popular among people for a very long time. Many centuries ago, buying gems for beauty and monetary value, was one of the lesser reasons for owning them.
Far more important were happiness, luck and well being. That is because long before Gems became articles of adornment, they were talismans.
The idea of the gem as a powerful charm originated in Babylon as well as in ancient India. Both cultures have accepted the idea that gems have magical powers and virtues.
The representation of an astrological planet by means of a distinctive colour formed a part of the religions art of ancient Chaldea. The Assyrians, who subdued the chaldeans, assimilated their religion and built nine storeyed temples to the planets. Each storey was dedicated to a particular planet and was decorated with the colour which represented that planet.
As astrological planet is conceived as an anthropomorphic God and the Gem which represents him bears his magical image. The Gem therefore, acquires a potency which counteracts any of his evil qualities. This means that when this Gem is worn it will counteract all evil or negative forces of the planet.
For the Indian sages, wearing Gems was a very practical means to attune oneself to life forces and the daily influences they exert. They base their Nine-Gem system, still very much in use in many Eastern societies, on the “Vedas”, the basis of Hinduism. Whenever a talisman of good fortune is required, a nine gem finger or the Navarathne is constructed and worn.
